Choosing your bridal makeup artist is one of those decisions that feels small until it isn't. It's not just about finding someone talented but it's about finding someone you trust to get it right on a day you don't get to redo. After nearly a decade doing bridal glam across Houston, here's what I tell brides to actually look for.
Start with their portfolio, not their price
A beautiful Instagram grid doesn't always mean consistent work. Look for range. Can this artist do soft glam and full glam equally well? Do their brides all end up looking like some version of the same face, or does the artistry adapt to yourfeatures and skin tone? If you have rich, deep, or medium skin tones, this matters even more. Not every artist has the training or product range to do your skin justice. Ask to see full galleries, not just curated highlight reels.
Ask how they handle your skin, specifically
A good bridal artist should ask you questions before you ask them anything. Your skin type, sensitivities, how your makeup tends to wear throughout a long event, whether you sweat or get emotional easily (you probably will, and that's a good thing). If an artist doesn't ask, that's information too.
Read the reviews for specifics, not just stars
Five stars tells you very little on its own. Look for reviews that mention communication, timeliness, and whether the artist adjusted based on feedback. Brides who write things like "she took my inspo photo and gave me exactly what I asked for" or "I didn't have to make a single adjustment" are telling you something a star rating can't.
Understand what's actually included
This is where a lot of bridal quotes get confusing. Before you book anyone, you should know:
Does the price include a trial or preview appointment?
Is touch-up service included, or is it an add-on?
What happens if your bridal party grows or shrinks after booking?
Is travel included, or billed separately?
What's the deposit, and what's the cancellation policy?
A transparent artist will have clear answers to all of this before you ever sign anything.
Confirm they have a real contract
This one's non-negotiable. Wedding day services should always come with a signed agreement covering payment terms, cancellation policy, and what happens if either party needs to make a change. If an artist is working without a contract, that's a red flag; not because something will necessarily go wrong, but because it should never be left to chance on a day this important.
Trust how you feel in the trial
Numbers and portfolios matter, but so does the way you feel in the chair. Do you feel heard? Rushed? Comfortable asking questions? Your wedding morning should feel calm, not like one more thing to manage. If your trial feels like that from the very first appointment, that's often the clearest sign you've found the right artist.
